Tips and Tricks

So you scheduled your photo shoot? Now what? Here are some helpful hints to make the most of your photo session. Planning ahead will make the day of the photo shoot more enjoyable.

General Tips for the big and small
  • If a haircut is in order, do it a week or two prior to your photo shoot. You don't want that just cut look or even worse show up for your rock-star day with a bad haircut, at least you might have a chance to get it fixed before hand.
  • Select outfits in advance. Outfits should fit the 'theme' of your photo shoot.  Bring several outfits and options with. You may or may not get to all of them, but too many options are better than going without. (See styling tips for more info)
  • There are some tricks to photographing glasses.  The easiest obviously is not to wear them, but some of us don't have that option. Tipping glasses forward a little does help to reduce glare.
  • Think about accessories, layers and scarf, hats are fun to play with.
  • If you come across pictures you like, tear them out of magazines or print from the internet. Bring them with to share the day of the shoot or during the pre- consultation.
  • If you want props included in your photos, put them with your clothing so you don't forget
  • Pack a bag with makeup, hairspray, brush/comb, etc (if your photo shoot is outdoor or on location, are you going to need a mirror and other basics.
  • It might be a good idea to wear a cami or undershirt so if you have to change in a parking lot on location some where it's just a little easier.
  • Bring a couple snacks and some water along if necessary
Tips for the Little Ones
  • A happy camper is much easier to work with than a crabby camper! What is the best time of day for your youngster? Schedule your appointment around naps and food.
  • Bring plenty of outfits. Sometimes it's easiest if you are only changing tops so jeans and khakis are always a great starting block.
  • Bring a favorite toy - something that will get your child's attention. You may be asked to play entertainer.
  • As a parent, come prepared to be in the shot. You might be used as a prop, especially in situations where the child may not be able to sit on their own yet.
  • If you are bringing multiple children, bring something to keep them occupied if it's not 'their' turn, or an extra set of helping hands if necessary. Again, happy children cooperate a lot better than crabby pants.
  • Most of all be flexible. Share your ideas ahead of time. No additional cameras allowed.
On the day of the shoot make sure to allow yourself plenty of time to get ready. (I know... easier said than done).  Remember to E-A-T something before you leave for your appointment. Drink plenty of water and then take a bottle of water along with you. (Water doesn't stain if it spills, so stick with water rather than soda or another beverage.)

Before you walk out the door, check yourself in the mirror. Be sure make-up isn't smudged, hair isn't frizzing or sticking out in odd places, things that should be tucked in ARE tucked in and those that shouldn't be AREN'T, check again for stains or holes in clothing, and SMILE!

Take a deep breath and RELAX! A portrait sessions should be FUN! Be yourself. And you'll get some great shots!
